Sea Gardening in Japan

A Winter Journey with Datscha Radio

With the support of a scholarship from the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn, Datscha Radio will travel to Japan from November 2025 to January 2026.
Of course, Ms Schaffner is quite overwhelmed! The aim of this trip is research and radio with a theme I already took up in 2017 (India) and 2019 (Taiwan): “Waste Culture”. Any ambiguities are intended.

Japan, which produces the most plastic waste after the USA, also interests me because of its precarious situation as an island nation threatened by rising sea levels. ‘Sea Gardening’ aims to combine both topics in a radio format.
The journey will take me to three different regions of Japan, where I plan to stay for longer periods of time to conduct research and learn about specific cultures of knowledge:

  • Kobe (in collaboration with the C.A.P. Kobe artist house and artist community Bison) –> sea and waste
  • Togatta, Miyagi district (in loose collaboration with Togatta AIR as a visitor)
    –> “Onsen Trash”
  • Okinawa –> everything open

In addition, I intend to approach the topic of ‘waste’ cinematically and in texts, and summarise the results in a 30-minute video: Waste Culture – A Recital for Hands and Voices.
